The new Aldi on the old Esso garage site on East Road should be open in early December, with up to 40 jobs going.

Aldi says its new Egremont shop should be open in early December. It's going up where the old East Road Esso garage was, at East Road and Wyndham Place, and it should mean up to 40 jobs. Aldi put Egremont on its official list of new shops opening before Christmas on 2 October, but it hasn't said the exact day or the opening hours yet.
It's taken a while to get here. Aldi first put plans in early in 2024, then got asked for more detail about traffic, and it all sat on hold for most of the year. Plenty of folk in town were worried Aldi was going to go for Whitehaven instead. Aldi said it was sticking with both, and Egremont got planning permission in November 2024. The bigger Whitehaven shop opened on Preston Street in April, and Aldi says the pair of them add up to £14 million going into the area.
The plans show the Egremont shop will have about 1,390 square metres of shop floor, 86 parking spaces with five accessible and nine parent-and-child spaces, and four electric car chargers.
It's not the only new shop on the way either. TJ Hughes says it's opening in Egremont before the end of November.
