C4017 Near Cleator Moor to Close for Four Weeks from Monday 19 October

From Monday, part of the C4017 out of Cleator Moor is shut for about four weeks while United Utilities work on the water network. There's a signed diversion, but it's a long way round.

If you drive the C4017 out of Cleator Moor, the road up towards Ennerdale Bridge, you'll want to know this before Monday. A chunk of it is shutting so United Utilities can get on with some water works.

It's about 480 metres, starting where it meets the U4032 and heading north east. It shuts from Monday 19 October, and it should be about four weeks, with the roadworks listings saying Friday 13 November. The paperwork technically lets it run for up to 18 months, but that's standard. The council says it only expects to need four weeks, and only when the signs are out.

The diversion's a fair old trek. It takes you over Cold Fell on the C4004, then Kirkland Road, West Road, the U4026, Rowrah Road, Arlecdon Parks Road, the A5086 Frizington Road and Wath Bridge. So set off a bit earlier than usual, especially at the busy times.

If you're walking, or happy to get off your bike and push, you'll still be able to get through.

Got questions about the closure? Give the council's Highways Hotline a bell on 0300 373 3736 and quote TTROC/19450. Anything about the water works themselves, ask United Utilities.

A 480-metre stretch of the C4017 near Cleator Moor will close from Monday 19 October, expected until 13 November, for United Utilities water works, with a signed diversion via Cold Fell, Rowrah and Frizington.

This is for drivers who use the C4017 out of Cleator Moor, listed by roadworks services as the Cleator Moor to Ennerdale Bridge road. Cumberland Council has made a temporary order closing part of it so United Utilities Water can carry out utility works.

The closure covers about 480 metres of the C4017, starting at its junction with the U4032 and running north east. It comes into force on Monday 19 October and is expected to last around four weeks, with roadworks listings showing an end date of Friday 13 November. The legal order can stay in force for up to 18 months, but the council says it expects the restriction to be needed for only four weeks, and only while the signs are displayed.

The signed diversion uses the open sections of the C4017, the C4004 over Cold Fell, Kirkland Road, West Road, the U4026, Rowrah Road, Arlecdon Parks Road, the A5086 Frizington Road and Wath Bridge. That is a long loop, so allow extra time, particularly at busy times of day. A route for people on foot and for cyclists who get off and walk will be kept open throughout the works.

For questions about the closure, ring the Cumberland Council Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736 and quote reference TTROC/19450. Questions about the water works themselves are best directed to United Utilities.
