Whats the Crack with the Yellow Bins? Crews Filling Around 2,000 Grit Bins Across Cumberland This Summer
Marra Mode is how we'd tell you this in the Co-op. Switch it off for the straight version.
Highways are out topping up about 2,000 yellow grit bins while it's still summer! If yours is running low, note the bin number on the sticker to report it online or give them a bell on 0300 373 3736.
Highways aren't gonna be caught out this winter. If you live off the main gritting runs, then carry on reading this. Crews are out now, checking and topping up around 2,000 yellow bins so they're not empty when the ice actually turns up. That's the salt needed for the public roads and pavements, the bits the gritters don't hit first. Mind, its not for use on private paths and drives, public roads and footpaths only!
Every bin's now been numbered, so if one near you is running low you can report it quoting that number. That should take any guesswork out of which ones need a top up. You can do it at cumberland.gov.uk/roads, or give Highways a bell on 0300 373 3736.
Councillor Denise Rollo said "It might feel a little strange talking about winter when many of us are enjoying the summer months, but our teams work year-round to keep Cumberland moving safely."
"While residents are making the most of the warmer weather, our crews are out checking and filling grit bins, replenishing salt stocks and making sure we're prepared for whatever winter brings."
There's a Winter Ready section on the council site if you want to read it.
Fun Fact - about two thousand yellow bins countywide and they've all got a number on them now! Well it's not rocket science!
Cumberland Council's Highways Team is checking and refilling around 2,000 grit bins. Each bin now has a unique sticker number. Report a low one at cumberland.gov.uk/roads or on 0300 373 3736.
This is for anyone in Cumberland who lives off the main gritting routes — villages, steep hills, sharp bends, and the roads by the school — and who may need a grit bin when the ice comes.
It is still summer, but Cumberland Council's Highways Team has already started preparing for winter. Crews are checking and refilling around 2,000 grit bins so they are ready when the weather turns.
The bins are the bright yellow ones. They sit off the priority gritting network, to put salt on public roads and footpaths when those roads ice over. The council has also updated its Weather Ready pages — covering snow and ice, heatwaves and storms — which sit behind the yellow banner on the council homepage.
Every grit bin now has a sticker with a unique reference number, so a bin running low is easier to report. Do that at cumberland.gov.uk/roads, or call the Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736.

Salt from council grit bins and heaps is for public roads and footpaths only. Anyone who needs salt for a private driveway or path should buy their own from a local retailer.
Advice and updates through the year are in the Winter Ready section of the Cumberland Council website.
Fun Fact: there are about 2,000 of those yellow bins across Cumberland — and each one now has its own number on a sticker.
