Expect fences and works vans round Borough Park for a while.
Enabling works have started at Borough Park in Workington, the site of the planned shared stadium for Workington AFC and Workington Town. The works should take about three months.
This is for Workington AFC and Workington Town supporters and for people living near Borough Park. Cumberland Council says enabling works began this week to prepare the site for the main construction of the Cumberland Sports Village.
Story Contracting Ltd is doing the work, which is expected to take around three months. It includes security fencing, a construction compound, asbestos removal, utility diversions and removing existing equipment.
The finished village will give both clubs a shared stadium. A reserved matters planning application has been submitted for a stadium holding up to 5,000 spectators. Council leader Cllr Mark Fryer said: "The commencement of enabling works is a significant step in preparing the site for the main construction phase."
The project is funded by the UK Government Town Deal, Cumberland Council, Cumbria Combined Authority and the Football Foundation. Expect fencing and contractor traffic around Borough Park over the coming months.
