They've started on the new units at Leconfield in Cleator Moor. Two buildings, late 2027, meant for firms that actually make and fix things — not another empty promise on a board.

They've finally broken ground at Leconfield. Two new units on the iSH Enterprise Campus in Cleator Moor — Unit 9 and Unit 12 — with Morgan Sindall doing the build, and the doors not due until late 2027.

This is the council's project, with Town Deal and Levelling Up money, plus the NDA and Sellafield behind it. The idea is space for robotics, manufacturing and digital firms, using the skills this area already has.

Mark Fryer called it good news for Cleator Moor. Gary McKeating at iSH said seeing kit on site makes it real, and that it should be a place for people who actually do the work — and for local folk to get a look-in on the jobs. Sellafield's Euan Hutton wants the supply chain in the room, not watching from the sidelines.

The buildings are meant to be proper workshops, not glass boxes: high eaves, parking and loading, solar and heat pumps, EPC A. If you run a firm that might use one, the contact is on the council write-up. The hard bit, as McKeating said, is making sure this lot actually delivers for the town once the cladding is up.

Cumberland Council has appointed Morgan Sindall to build Units 9 and 12 at Leconfield Industrial Estate — available from late 2027, aimed at robotics, manufacturing and digital firms.

Construction has started on the Industrial Solutions Hub (iSH) Enterprise Campus at Leconfield Industrial Estate in Cleator Moor.

Cumberland Council has appointed Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure Ltd to build Unit 9 and Unit 12. The units are expected to be available from late 2027. The campus is led by the council, with government backing through the Town Deal and Levelling Up programmes, and support from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Sellafield Ltd.

iSH says the wider West Cumbria programme is aimed at robotics, manufacturing and digital work, building on the area's nuclear skills rather than replacing them.

Council leader Councillor Mark Fryer said it was "another important step forward for this project and is great news for Cleator Moor and the wider Cumberland economy." iSH managing director Gary McKeating said seeing people and machinery on site "finally makes it very real," and that the point is a place "where the doers, fixers and problem-solvers can come together" and where local people can reach the jobs that growth creates.

Sellafield Ltd chief executive Euan Hutton said the campus should support Sellafield's mission and leave a lasting local impact, and asked the supply chain to engage with iSH. Morgan Sindall's James Garnett said the units would be high-quality, sustainable workspace, with chances for local people and firms during the build.

The buildings are planned as double-height flexible workspace: single occupancy or "grow-on" space, steel frame, insulated cladding, loading and parking, solar panels and heat pumps, an EPC A rating, EV charging, and 8m eaves. Businesses wanting more detail should use the contact on the council's announcement.
