Wasdale Mountain Rescue are after new volunteers. You've got until 15 September. Have a look on wmrt.org.uk or drop recruitment@wmrt.org.uk a line.

What's the crack with getting onto Wasdale Mountain Rescue? They're recruiting, and you've got until 15 September to put your name in.

If you live within about half an hour of Gosforth and you're 18 or over, this is you. Volunteer rescuers for the western fells. You've got to be fit, move on steep ground, and find your way with a map and compass. No formal quals. They'll take you on a 12-month probation, give you a mentor, and pair you with someone experienced on a shout. Basics first. There's a Scottish winter weekend and a Welsh summer one if you want them.

They're not after a lone hero. Care about the folk you're helping, work with the rest of the team, and actually put the hours in. The rest, they say, they'll help you learn.

Not sure? Have a word with them at a local event this month, or drop recruitment@wmrt.org.uk a line. The pack's on wmrt.org.uk under How to Join Our Team.

Fun Fact: their patch includes Scafell Pike — highest mountain in England.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team is recruiting volunteer rescuers. Applications close on 15 September 2026. Details are on wmrt.org.uk, or email recruitment@wmrt.org.uk.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team wants people in West Cumbria — especially anyone living within about a 30-minute drive of its Gosforth base — who could volunteer as a rescuer on the western Lake District fells.

The latest recruitment round is open now. Applications close on 15 September 2026. New members serve a 12-month probation, with a mentor, training towards the team's competencies, and an experienced member beside them on callouts. Training concentrates on doing the basics well. There are Scottish winter and Welsh summer mountaineering weekends for those who want to go further.

Applicants must be 18 or over, fit enough to carry kit, and able to move confidently on steep, mountainous ground in all weathers. They need to navigate with local knowledge and a map and compass. There are no formal qualifications. The team says it needs people who are caring and compassionate towards those they help, able to work with others, and willing to commit their time. "Everything else we can support you to develop."

If you are interested but unsure, speak to team members at events over the coming month, or email recruitment@wmrt.org.uk for an informal conversation. The information pack and how to apply are on wmrt.org.uk, under How to Join Our Team.

Fun Fact: the team's ground includes Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.
