The big resurfacing job on Central Way is happening at night now, up to six nights from 2 November, 8.30pm to 4am. Until Friday you've still got the daytime temporary lights.
This one's for anybody who drives, cycles, gets the bus or runs a business round Central Way in Workington, and it's an update on the closure we told you about earlier this month.
The council's sorted new dates for the last bit of the Central Way job. The old plan was a five-day full closure from 19 October to resurface it. Now the resurfacing's being done at night by their contractor, DSD Construction, over up to six nights from Monday 2 November, weather permitting.
On those nights the road's shut from 8.30pm to 4am, with signed diversions. Ambulances and fire engines can still get through, and so can folk on foot, anybody pushing a bike, and the bin wagons.
Before that, the council's own highways lads are cracking on with the rest. The two-way temporary lights stay up during working hours, 7.30am to 4pm, until Friday 30 October.
The whole job covers road and drain repairs, better street lights, improvements for cyclists, new road markings and a raised crossing to make it safer for people walking and on bikes. The council says it knows Central Way's a key route and it's trying to keep the hassle down.
What you can do: give yourself a few extra minutes at the lights this week. From 2 November, if you're driving through late at night or early doors, say for shifts, plan another way round. Cumberland Council says the final stage of its Central Way Active Travel Scheme, carriageway resurfacing, will now take place overnight for up to six nights from Monday 2 November, with the road closed from 8.30pm to 4am. Daytime temporary lights stay until 30 October.
This is for drivers, bus passengers, cyclists and businesses in Workington town centre who use Central Way, and an update on the closure we reported earlier this month.
Cumberland Council has confirmed new dates for the last part of the Central Way Active Travel Scheme. Earlier plans set out a five-day full closure from 19 October for resurfacing. The council now says the carriageway resurfacing will be done by its contractor, DSD Construction Ltd, over up to six nights from Monday 2 November, subject to the weather.
During that phase the road will be closed from 8.30pm to 4am each night, with signed diversions. Access for emergency vehicles will be kept throughout, and pedestrians, people pushing bikes and bin lorries will still be able to get through.
Until then, the council's in-house highways team is carrying on with the rest of the work. Two-way temporary traffic lights will stay in place during working hours, 7.30am to 4pm, until Friday 30 October.
The scheme includes carriageway and drainage repairs, better street lighting, improvements for cycling, fresh road markings and a new raised table crossing to make it safer for people walking and cycling. The council says it knows Central Way is a key route for residents, businesses and visitors, and it is working to keep disruption down.
What you can do: allow extra time at the lights during the day this week. From 2 November, plan a different route if you drive through late at night or early in the morning, such as for shift work.
