If you've served, even for a day, or you're family of someone who has, there's a free breakfast in Workington on Tuesday with your name on it.
The Royal British Legion club is running a veterans' café on Tuesday 20 October from 10.30am. Breakfast and a brew are free. The idea is to build up a bit of a support network, so it's a chance to meet folk who've been there too. There'll be people on hand to help with housing and benefits questions, and games and activities for the kids, so bring the family.
It's not a one-off, either. The club puts on events like this for veterans and their families through the year.
Worth saying, because plenty of people don't realise: if you served even one day, you count as a veteran. That goes for people who did a short stint years ago and never really thought of themselves that way.
Up the coast in Maryport, Parkside care home has just become the first Cumberland Council care home to get Veteran Friendly Framework status. That means staff work out which residents served, help stop them getting lonely, and make sure they get the specialist support they're due. It lasts until the next review in 2028.
The café's at Workington Royal British Legion, St Johns Court, CA14 3DS. You don't need to bring anything, but if you're after help with housing or benefits, take any letters with you. And if you know an old soldier, sailor or airman who might not have heard, give them a nudge.

The legion points out that anyone who has served for even one day is classed as a veteran. That includes people who did a short period of service many years ago and may never have thought of themselves as veterans.
Support for veterans in West Cumbria has also been recognised in Maryport this month. Parkside Residential Care Home has become the first Cumberland Council care home to achieve Veteran Friendly Framework status. To gain it, homes must identify the veterans in their care, reduce social isolation and help residents get specialist support. The accreditation runs until its next review in 2028.
