Overnight Carriageway Resurfacing Planned for Major West Cumbria Routes
Road ahead closed — overnight resurfacing works

They're finally going to fettle the A595 and A596 overnight this July - full road closures from 7pm to 6am. Here's the crack so you're not caught out.

They're finally going to fettle the roads! Cumberland Council and Connect Roads are finally making a start on some of our really bad roads, but it will mean they're shut overnight through July. They will be completely shut between 7pm and 6am, so folks will have to find another way round.

The work crews can see you through if you work nearby or need to ga yam, but you might have to wait a bit. Emergency services, and folks travelling on shanks's pony can still get through.

Here's the exact schedule from the council:

A595, Rosley Crossroads to Crofton Layby — starts Wednesday 2 July, eight nights in a row.

A595 at Bothel — starts Saturday 12 July, three nights.

A596 at Heathcote — starts Tuesday 15 July, two nights.

It all depends on the weather too, so things might shift if it buckets down.

If you need a crack about these roads, you can ring the Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736 or check one.network for live closures. It's going to be a bit of a pain — but taking a gander at the state of these roads, it's definitely got to be done!

Cumberland Council and Connect Roads will close sections of the A595 and A596 overnight through July — full details on dates, locations, and diversion routes below.

Cumberland Council, in partnership with Connect Roads, has confirmed a programme of overnight carriageway resurfacing across three key West Cumbria routes this July.

The works are designed to repair deteriorating road surfaces while keeping daytime traffic moving — but motorists should expect full overnight closures on the affected sections.

Each scheme will run from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM under full road closures. Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place, and traffic management staff will be on site. Residents and businesses within the closure areas can be escorted through the works where it is safe to do so, though short delays are possible depending on site activity. Access for emergency services, pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.

All works remain subject to weather conditions and on-site constraints.

The confirmed schedule is:

A595, Rosley Crossroads to Crofton Layby — starting Wednesday 2 July 2026, running for eight nights.

A595, Bothel — starting Saturday 12 July 2026, running for three nights.

A596, Heathcote — starting Tuesday 15 July 2026, running for two nights.

These schemes form part of Cumberland Council's wider commitment to maintaining the highway network across West Cumbria. Residents who need special access arrangements can contact the Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736 or visit cumberland.gov.uk/roads. Live and planned closures can also be checked on one.network before travelling.
