From Saturday you can see the Wildlife Photographer of the Year pictures at the Beacon without going to London. It's on till the end of January.

This one's for families, anybody with a camera, and anyone after something to do in Whitehaven over half-term and the winter.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year, the big touring exhibition on loan from the Natural History Museum in London, opens in the Beacon's Harbour Gallery on Saturday 24 October and it's on until 31 January 2027. The museum's shut for a bit over Christmas, dates still to be confirmed.

It's the 62nd year of the exhibition, and there are 100 pictures, picked by a panel of judges from over 65,000 entries from 121 countries and territories. Expect animals doing things you've never seen and creatures from all over the world.

It opens just before half-term, and the Beacon has stuff on for the kids that week too. Pet Encounters are on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 October at 11am, 1pm and 3pm (£9 a child, £5.50 an adult, and that doesn't include museum entry). Spooky Halloween Crafts are on Wednesday 28, Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October at 11am and 2pm (£5 a child). There's a free Spooky STEM workshop with the Sellafield Education Outreach Team on Thursday 29 October at 11am, 1pm and 2.30pm.

There's another exhibition coming as well, Pillar 200: 200 Years of Climbing in England and Wales, which opens in the Light and Dark Gallery on 31 October.

The Beacon's on West Strand. It's usually open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4.30pm, and Sunday, 11am to 4pm, last entry 45 minutes before closing, but the hours change in the school holidays. A day ticket is £7.50 for an adult, £4 for a child, or £19 for a family.

What you can do: check the times and book on thebeacon-whitehaven.co.uk.

Fun Fact: The Beacon says the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition first started back in 1965.
