The Reds only got a keeper signed an hour or two before the deadline last week, and now they've called off Tuesday's training to rest the walking wounded before Cleethorpes come to Borough Park on Saturday.

This one's for Reds fans heading up to Borough Park on Saturday.

Workington have called off Tuesday night's training, and they might scrap Thursday's an' all, to look after four players who were struggling after the 2-1 win at Bamber Bridge, Billy Barr told Cumbria Crack. The injury and concussion list has been that long the club's had to lean on the young lads.

Last week it got as far as the goalkeepers. Number one Alex Mitchell was already out under concussion protocols, then back-up Danny Eccles got crocked in the Whitby Town game. There was a 5pm Friday deadline to register a new keeper, the first one they lined up pulled out, and the loan for Morecambe's Alfie Scales was only done just after 3pm on the Friday.

Barr said: "I have to say I was panicking on Friday." Scales, who's a Whitby lad, had a great game at Irongate. Luke Hunter scored nine minutes after half-time from Tom Stephenson's pass, then Steven Rigg made it two on 73 minutes, his first goal from open play in nearly a year. Nat Knight-Percival headed one back for Bamber Bridge in the 90th minute. There were 526 there.

Barr was chuffed with young Zack Martin as well, who's earned his place in the squad after two good games. He said: "He's done fantastic really."

Next it's Cleethorpes Town at home in the FA Trophy first round proper on Saturday 24 October. Winners get £3,000 and the losers £775.

Workington AFC have cancelled Tuesday's training to protect struggling players after an injury and concussion crisis forced a last-minute goalkeeper loan, ahead of Saturday's FA Trophy first round tie against Cleethorpes Town at Borough Park.

This is for Workington AFC supporters planning to be at Borough Park on Saturday.

The Reds have cancelled Tuesday night's training session, and may also cancel Thursday's, to protect four players who were struggling after Saturday's 2-1 win at Bamber Bridge, manager Billy Barr told Cumbria Crack. The club is in the middle of a long injury and concussion crisis that has forced it to rely on young players.

Last week the problem reached the goalkeepers. First-choice keeper Alex Mitchell was already out under concussion protocols when deputy Danny Eccles was ruled out with an injury picked up against Whitby Town. With a 5pm Friday registration deadline, a first back-up option pulled out, and the club completed a loan deal for Morecambe goalkeeper Alfie Scales just after 3pm on Friday.

Barr said: "I have to say I was panicking on Friday." Scales, who comes from Whitby, went on to play well at Irongate. Luke Hunter scored nine minutes after half-time from Tom Stephenson's pass, and Steven Rigg added a second on 73 minutes, his first goal in open play for nearly a year. Nat Knight-Percival headed in a 90th-minute consolation for Bamber Bridge. The attendance was 526.

Barr also praised young Zack Martin, who has earned a place in the squad after two good performances, saying: "He's done fantastic really."

Next up is the FA Trophy first round proper at home to Cleethorpes Town on Saturday 24 October. The winners receive £3,000 in prize money and the losers £775.
