If you cut through town on Central Way, you'll need another route this week. It's shut for five days from Monday so they can resurface it.

This one's for anyone who drives, gets the bus or runs a business in Workington town centre, especially if Central Way is your usual way across town.

Central Way is shut completely for five days from Monday 19 October while Cumberland Council resurfaces it. It's part of the Central Way Active Travel Scheme, the job that started on 7 September to sort out the footpath and make it better for people walking, wheeling and cycling. That's why you've been sat at two-way and three-way temporary lights there for the last few weeks.

When the council put out its list of Workington roadworks, it said it would publish the traffic management and closure details nearer the time. We couldn't find a diversion route anywhere, so follow the signs on the day and check before you leave.

And it's not the only work going on. Electricity North West is doing new connection works on the A596 High Street from Tuesday 20 October to Monday 26 October, with traffic management in place. Then Northern Gas Networks is replacing a gas main on Workington Viaduct from Thursday 29 October right through to Thursday 3 December. The A66 Active Travel work on Stainburn Road runs until Friday 4 December, and the Main Road footbridge at High Harrington is getting repaired from 4 January to 26 March.

The council's asking folk to plan ahead and give themselves a bit of extra time.

What you can do: look up live closures and diversions on the One.Network map at one.network/uk before you go. If you've got a question about the council's works, go to cumberland.gov.uk/roads or ring the Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736.

Cumberland Council has scheduled a five-day full closure of Central Way in Workington from Monday 19 October so the road can be resurfaced as part of the Central Way Active Travel Scheme.

This is for drivers, bus passengers and businesses in Workington town centre, and for anyone who normally uses Central Way to get across town.

Cumberland Council has scheduled a full closure of Central Way for five days from Monday 19 October so the road can be resurfaced. The resurfacing is part of the Central Way Active Travel Scheme, which started on 7 September and is improving the footway and the facilities for people walking, wheeling and cycling. Temporary two-way and three-way traffic lights have been used during the earlier stages of the work.

When the council published its Workington roadworks programme, it said more detail on traffic management and the closure would be published nearer the time. We have not found a published diversion route, so follow the signs on the ground and check before you travel.
