Cumberland Council has confirmed that the Workington Town Centre Public Realm and Connectivity Project is nearing its completion — a major milestone in the town's £33 million Levelling Up transformation delivered by Thomas Armstrong Ltd.

The scheme aims to create a more pedestrian-friendly town centre with safer public spaces, better connectivity for local businesses, and infrastructure to attract further private investment. Works on Murray Road and Central Way are now in their final stages, with only a raised crossing and final surfacing still to be completed in early July.

Drivers should note two separate programmes of disruption on Central Way:

Electricity North West utility works under the bridge on Central Way run from Monday 29 June to Saturday 5 July 2026. The road will be closed from the junction with Campbell-Savours Way for approximately 150 metres in a north-easterly direction. A signed vehicle diversion will be in place. Pedestrian and dismounted cyclist access will be maintained. Live details are on one.network (reference GB149515695).

Overnight resurfacing closures on Central Way from the entrance to the multi-storey car park will run from Monday 6 July to Saturday 11 July 2026, each night from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM, to allow essential carriageway resurfacing and the final raised crossing installation.

Alongside the public realm works, the new Workington Innovation Centre opens on Thursday 2 July 2026 on the site of the former Central Car Park on Central Way. The £12 million facility, operated by Oxford Innovation Space, will provide purpose-built office space focused on digital technology and advanced manufacturing businesses.

The wider £33 million investment programme also supports the Digital Accelerator Hub, the Port of Workington Logistics and Energy Hub, new cycleways, improvements to Hall Park and Cumberland Sports Village.

Council leader Councillor Mark Fryer said: "This is a hugely important moment for Workington and a clear sign of the investment and ambition we are bringing to the town." He thanked residents and businesses for their patience during the disruption.
